Insomnia & Sleep

Suffering from insomnia?

Insomnia has been called the world’s worst torture, lying in bed trying to will yourself asleep or taking sleeping tablets which may leave you feeling groggy in the morning.
  • Do you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep?
  • Do you wake up feeling tired or un-refreshed after what should have been a good night’s sleep?
  • Does fatigue affect your day-to-day well being and ability to function?
  • We are here to help!

Melatonin & cortisol – sleep & wake hormones

Our sleep-wake cycle is called the circadian rhythm.
Our circadian rhythm is meant to naturally have us falling asleep within a few minutes of hitting the pillow with the lights out, and waking up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day in the morning.
If this isn’t the case for you, you know your circadian rhythm is out of rhythm!

The most common cause of sleeping concern we see in our practice is an imbalance in the sleep-wake cycle hormones cortisol and melatonin.

An imbalance in our circadian rhythm hormones may be associated with:

  • Feeling tired during the day yet more ‘awake’ at night time.
  • Having difficulty falling asleep.
  • Having difficulty staying asleep.
  • Waking up through the night and having trouble getting back to sleep.
  • Feeling tired but not ‘sleepy’ at night time.
  • Waking too early in the morning.
  • Being a ‘light sleeper’ or having restless sleep

Hormones are the messengers in our body, and if you have a messenger telling the body and mind to ‘wake up, don’t be sleepy’ then you may have difficulty falling asleep, and staying asleep!

The primary “sleep hormone” is melatonin, and our key “awake hormone” is cortisol. Thankfully, these sleep/wake hormones can be easily tested.
Once we have your results we focus on correcting and balancing your sleep-wake hormones which may take a matter of 2-6 weeks.

Correcting your sleep-wake hormones aims to naturally balance your circadian rhythm and have you sleeping soundly and waking refreshed with daily energy and well-being!
