PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)

A growing epidemic

PCOS seems to be a growing epidemic, with more and more women being diagnosed each year.

Most women are told by their GP the only current treatment is to remain on the pill (the oral contraceptive pill), that they may have difficulty falling pregnant, and may require fertility treatment such as IVF in later years.

However, we have been able to assist many of our PCOS patients back to regular menstrual cycles, reduced PCOS symptoms, successful conception and greater control over their health.

PCOS Symptoms

At Wellness Perth Natural Medicine we understand there are many effective natural options that may support PCOS and assist its surrounding symptoms, including hormone imbalances, the factors behind weight gain and difficulty losing weight, excess androgen hormones such as testosterone, and fertility difficulties. More About PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)

Natural Medicine for PCOS

Our approach to PCOS support involves testing your individual hormone levels, to understand exactly which imbalances may be involved in your PCOS symptoms and concerns. Hormone testing may include blood testing, salivary hormone testing, and urine testing which may provide a detailed understanding of your individual hormone imbalances.

PCOS testing includes:

  • Complete thyroid profile (must include TSH, T4, T3 and both thyroid antibodies, not just TSH) Read here for more information about thyroid conditions and testing.
  • Fasting glucose and fasting insulin.
  • Androgen profile (including testosterone, SHBG, FAI and Androstenedione)
  • Prolactin.
  • LH and FSH (luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone)
  • Cholesterol panel.
  • Salivary hormone profile (including cortisol, DHEAs, testosterone, progesterone, and all three oestrogen hormones). Read here for more information about hormone testing.

Once we receive your results, we are able to support the underlying hormonal imbalances which may be involced in your PCOS symptoms. Most patients see a significant improvement in their PCOS symptoms within 3-6 months, after which we recommend follow-up testing in 12 months. Some women are genetically more inclined to produce excessive androgen levels and other hormonal imbalances which may be involved in PCOS and may require retesting every 2-4 years to ensure their hormone levels remain within ideal ranges.

For women wishing to support their PCOS symptoms in order to fall pregnant, we encourage you to follow up with preconception care, to ensure you and your family a safe and healthy pregnancy. Read here for more information about Preconception Care.
