Thyroid Conditions

The importance of thyroid hormones

The thyroid is one of the most important glands of the body, producing hormones that control our energy and metabolism. Good thyroid hormone levels provide us with energy, body-warmth, fat-burning ability, healthy mood, hair growth, and healthy digestive function to name just a few!

Unfortunately, low thyroid conditions are increasingly common in Australia, and are frequently misdiagnosed, mistreated, or missed altogether.

Low Thyroid – Hypothyroidism

Low thyroid can be due to many different causes, such as prolonged stress; poor Iodine or Tyrosine levels; food intolerances; chronic inflammation plus many more.

Fortunately, at Wellness Perth Natural Medicine we have plenty to offer our patients suffering from low thyroid conditions.

The first step is to test your thyroid function to find out if you have a low thyroid condition, and to determine the reason why this is. We may initially utilise the Basal Body Temperature Test to screen for possible low thyroid function (Click to download the basal body temperature rate test).

This may be followed by blood testing for TSH, T4, T3, Reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies, plus urine testing for Tyrosine, Iodine and Selenium levels, which are nutrients required to produce thyroid hormones.

These advanced blood and urine tests are much more in-depth than the normal thyroid function test your local GP may test for, and we commonly find evidence of low thyroid conditions that were previously missed or left untreated.

These techniques are also designed to identify why the thyroid is not functioning correctly, allowing targeted treatment to correct your thyroid function for long-term health and wellness.

The length of time you may require natural medicine depends on the cause of your low thyroid condition. If it as simple as a low Iodine level (highly common in Australia), once we have tested your levels and know which dosage to prescribe, most patients begin to feel improvements over the first two weeks. If chronic stress has upset your thyroid and other hormones, it may take a little longer to correct the several issues that have caused your low thyroid condition.
